Welcome to Year 2.  

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to Year 2!  I hope you all had a relaxing summer holiday. The children have settled into routines in Year 2 brilliantly and we have had a wonderful first week together. I am very much looking forward to teaching your children this year 😊. This letter is just to clarify some of the routines in Year 2. However, these can sometimes change and I will endeavour to let you know as soon as possible if they do.

Reading – Every morning at 9am we will have phonics/reading lessons. If your child is still in a coloured Read Write Inc (RWI) group, then that means they are still on the phonics programme. If your child is on a banded book (such as purple, gold, white etc) that means they have finished the phonics programme and will have reading and spelling lessons with me instead of phonics lessons. Below explains how reading will work depending on whether your child is still on RWI or not.

• RWI children – On Wednesday, your child was sent home with two reading books to read until phonics lessons begin again on Monday. Next Wednesday (the 9^th and day 3 of the RWI programme), their books will be changed. They will then bring home a RWI book and a book bag book. They will also bring home a book for pleasure that will be a larger picture book from our reading corner. They can be changed at any time and it is your child’s responsibility to swap these for a new book whenever they like. Please note that they should read their RWI or book bag book aloud to you, not the book for pleasure as this book will not be their level. Children will get sticker in their diary if they have read three times in a week, and two stickers if they have read five times.

• Non RWI children – On Wednesday, your child took home a book from their current book band. As with last year, once a child is reading book banded books, they can change them whenever they like. However, please note that they should be reading each book a minimum of 5 times. Repetition aids fluency and builds both comprehension and vocabulary. Make sure that you are encouraging your child to point out any words they don’t know the meaning of and that you’re asking them questions to test their understanding as they read. They will also bring home a book for pleasure that will be a larger picture book from our reading corner. These can be changed at any time and it is your child’s responsibility to swap these for a new book whenever they like. Please note that they should read their banded book aloud to you, not the book for pleasure as this book will not be their level. Children will get sticker in their diary if they have read three times in a week, and two stickers if they have read five times.

Spellings – Only children who are no longer on phonics will do a weekly spelling test. These will be sent home on a Friday and children will be tested the following Friday. Scores will be recorded in reading diaries.

Communication - Messages can be passed on via school reading diaries.  If you have written an important message in the diary, please encourage your child to pass the diaries to an adult as we don’t always look at them until the afternoon.  You can also email me at mwaters@weaver.cheshire.sch.uk for any concerns or questions. If you need to report an absence or doctor’s appointment etc, please email the school office on admin@weaver.cheshire.sch.uk.

Seesaw – I will use Seesaw as a platform for home learning and to share photos from trips or special events. Please note that this is a learning platform and the message feature shouldn’t be used to contact me. This is because children have access to these messages, so emails only please! 😊

Snacks and Water Bottles - If your child has a snack for morning playtime please ensure that it is a healthy snack (e.g. fruit, cheese, crackers, veg sticks) and that it does not contain nuts.  The snacks will be placed in their school trays.  Please send your child with a bottle full of water only and ensure that it is named.

Lunch boxes - Most children in Year 2 have school lunches, however if your child would like to bring their own lunch, don't forget to name their lunch bag/box.

PE - PE will be on a Monday and a Tuesday this half term.  Children will come to school wearing their PE kits.  Please make sure your child is wearing black jogging bottoms or black leggings on days that are cold. Please make sure your child’s kit is named. PE will start on Monday 7^th September.

Cloakroom - Our cloakroom is along the main corridor, which is a fire exit route. Therefore, we are unable to have rucksacks/backpacks in school. Our Weaver book bags/folders fit into the children’s trays perfectly.

Home learning – A homework sheet will be sent home every Friday. Please upload this as a photo to Seesaw. I will post a link for each piece of homework.

Home time – As I get to know new faces, please shout/mouth the name of the child you are collecting when I look at you as this will really help! 😊
